Veganism is a little harder than it appears

In Food on July 26, 2010 at 1:37 pm

I’ve always had a soft spot for vegans.  I love the creative dishes, the incredible deserts (when done right) and then eco-friendly message.  But, as one couple finds, eating a vegan diet can mean reliance on processed foods and meal replacements.  Check out this article in the LA Times: Pantry Raid: Vegan Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Healthy.

Food Labeling and the Bodega

In Food on July 22, 2010 at 2:02 pm

The FDA announced yesterday that small businesses and vending machines with fewer than 20 locations can opt into the national food labeling requirements.  If they do opt in to the national requirements, the trade off is that they will no longer be subject to state or local requirements.  As a New Yorker who has been living with the posted labeling in chains for some time now, I am totally in favor of small businesses opting into this, and here’s why:

12-Inch Burger Raises Gluttony to New Heights

In Food on July 16, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Sidenote: Seven gave me nightmares for years…I can’t think of the word ‘gluttony’ without getting the creeps.

Behold:

Seriously, people, seriously?  Hot on the tail of the KFC Double Down, Carl’s Jr introduces the Foot Long Cheeseburger, i.e. three burgers on a hoagie.  Awesome.  What part of ‘documented obesity epidemic’ says ‘hey, let’s start selling the most unhealthy food possible in amounts enough for a family of 4 and pretend they’re single servings’?

Wise Words from the Great Bambino

“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”
- George Herman “Babe” Ruth

Great advice.  I feel like I’m constantly afraid of striking, and I see that fear in a lot of my clients as well.  From now on, I’m going to do my best to let that fear go. I think we could ALL benefit from that.

Nutritious AND Delicious, Right?

In Food on July 12, 2010 at 12:11 pm

According to an article on MSNBC.com, the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables is dwindling due to the use of modern pesticides.  Basically, pesticides make the vegetables ‘lazy’ because they don’t have to deal with the threat of infestation, so they don’t produce as many phytochemicals, i.e. the stuff that makes fruits and veggies healthy.  Of course, this is only the case for conventional produce, not organic.  Something else in this article I found interesting is that plants only have a finite amount of nutrients to bestow on their fruit/veggies, so these huge fruits and veggies are not more healthful than smaller ones, and perhaps even less so.  Just another way we’re learning that bigger isn’t always better.

I miss Domino

Do you guys remember the magazine Domino? The now-defunct magazine some of the most beautiful interiors I’ve ever seen.  In anticipation for my upcoming move, I’ve started assembling inspiration pictures like this one:

Isn’t that incredible?  From the pages of Domino. They never should have closed that magazine!

Email Malfunction

In Stuff I Hate on July 7, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Today I hate G-Mail. I thought all email from the site was feeding into my main email box, but apparently it hasn’t been.  So I’ve been missing email for the past month.  GRRRRR.  If I missed an email from you, please accept my apologies!  And please try again: katedonelan@gmail, I promise this time I’ll get it.
